One of the best ways to increase your exposure to English, improve your vocabulary and be an informed citizen of the world is by reading an English-language news site every day.
At the start of each course I usually ask my students how many of them read the news everyday (and remember, I teach adults); not everyone lifts up their hands, sometimes less than half do so. So I can’t take it for granted that people still read the news, even in their own native language, on a daily basis — because they don’t. (Reading articles posted by your friends on social media doesn’t count.)
The list below is not exhaustive, but they’re a good place to start:
Breaking News English is an excellent site specifically for English-language learners! Each news article is presented in several reading levels, plus there are related online activities and exercises to help you dig deeper.
For international news coverage, CNN and BBC are the most popular sites.
For English-language Indonesian newspapers, check out Jakarta Globe and The Jakarta Post — and if you’re Indonesian, you get the added benefit of reading more familiar domestic issues and news in English.
So start today, and read everyday. There’s no magic trick to increase your understanding of English. Just like Nike says, Just Do It.
